People you can't send on a training day
A nonprofit trains people it doesn't employ. Volunteers bring goodwill and a free Saturday, not a desk, a login or a training budget, and many move on within the year. Staff are stretched thin, so the volunteer manager briefs each new group by hand, in a corridor, between deliveries. In Saudi Arabia volunteering has already reached its Vision 2030 target, which means more first days than any coordinator can run in person.
What they need to know is not light. A volunteer may be the first person a visitor confides in, so safeguarding and PSEA can't wait for month three. Field workers carry cash, donations and the organisation's name into people's homes. Funders and regulators want proof of due care. Meanwhile the handbook is a long PDF last updated by someone who has left, and the evidence of training is a sheet of signatures in a drawer.
